My car is overheating — what do I do?

Short answer: pull over and shut it off. The most common cause is low coolant from a leak, followed by stuck thermostats, tired water pumps, and dead cooling fans. What you do in the next ten minutes decides whether this is a small repair or an engine.

Right now

Heat damage happens faster than you think.

An engine at normal temperature and an engine hot enough to warp its cylinder head are only minutes apart under the wrong conditions. “I was almost home” is how a $30 hose becomes a head gasket job.

Two rules while you're stopped: never open the radiator cap on a hot engine — the system is pressurized and it will scald you — and don't just pour water in and keep driving, because whatever pushed it hot is still there.

One trick that buys time in a pinch: turning the heater on full blast pulls some heat out of the engine. It's a limp-to-safety measure, not a fix. From there, a tow to the shop is almost always cheaper than the damage from driving it hot. Our cooling system page covers the repair side.

FAQ

Overheating questions, answered straight.

Can I drive it just a few more miles if the gauge is high?

Please don't. The difference between a water pump replacement and a warped head can literally be those few miles. Pull over, shut it off, and call — a tow is the cheapest part of this whole story.

It only overheats going uphill or towing. Is that still serious?

Yes — that's a cooling system at its limit, telling you early. It's also the cheapest stage to fix. Under load the margin disappears first; around town it disappears next.

Can I top it off with water?

In an emergency, plain water can get you somewhere safe. But coolant doesn't vanish on its own — if you're topping off, there's a leak, and water alone lacks the boil and freeze protection Idaho demands.

What does white exhaust smoke mean?

Sweet-smelling white smoke can mean coolant is burning inside the engine — a head gasket warning sign. Stop driving and get it tested before conclusions or big quotes; confirming it properly matters.
